Junior Pens Article Published in Teen Vogue

Junior Camryn Dixon’s ‘21 essay on racism’s historical pervasiveness in the American healthcare system titled, “The Roots of Racism in Healthcare” was published in Teen Vogue last week.
The essay, which was adapted from her 10th grade History of the Americas research paper, explores how the overt racial discrimination of the past persists and manifests in today’s racial disparities in health care for black Americans. Camryn also received first place in this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Regional Awards competition for this essay, making her eligible for national placement.

When asked what inspired her to write this essay, Camryn expressed that she is passionate about seeing the racial disparities in America’s healthcare system bridged. “I believe that the first step in improving the quality of care black Americans receive is to recognize the black Americans whose lives were sacrificed for the medical advancements achieved over the years. I love writing because it has allowed me to bring awareness to this issue.”
