GCS Honored at Science Olympiad

Fourteen students from the GCS Science Club competed in the New York City Regionals Science Olympiad, which explores multiple science topics through more than 20 different events. It is the largest regional and state science Olympiad in America. This was Grace Church School's first entry into the competition.

Two groups of students were honored with awards in specific events. Albert K '19, Jack L '19, and Elizabeth T '18 received the New School Award in the Experimental Design event. Abisola F '19 and Emma G '19 placed 9th in the Write It, Do It event. Overall, the GCS team placed in the top half of 66 high schools from around New York City.

The two faculty advisors for the GCS Science Club, Khaled Zia, Chemistry and Jon Benadiba, Physics, described the group as, "self-starters and enthusiastic learners." Of entering the Olympiad, Mr. Zia and Benadiba described student involvement, "They picked their events, and began the process of learning, building, then learning more and building again. They did all this with enthusiasm, curiosity, and joy."

Sophomore Albert K is the student-leader of the Science Club. "Albert has done outstanding work in organizing the students into their separate events and keeping them all engaged and excited throughout the year," Mr. Zia said.

The Science Club has set a goal of breaking into the top 20 in the 2018 competition.
